Separate Swiss payroll net from personal health premiums and rent. A Zurich example shows the monthly calculation without double deductions.

For an ordinary employee resident in Switzerland, the personal compulsory health-insurance premium is generally paid separately. Allow for it when turning payroll net into the amount available for other expenses. Still check your payslip and any employer arrangements so you do not subtract the same cost twice.

The Canton of Zurich distinguishes health insurance from social insurance deducted directly from pay. The Federal Office of Public Health describes funding through premiums, cost sharing and public contributions.

From payroll net to the remainder after housing and insurance

This invented budget uses an Obolus-calculated net figure: CHF 85,000 annual gross, tax year 2026, age 35, single, no children, no church tax, standard Zurich ZH model. Calculated on 26 October 2026; no municipality-level calculation. The CHF 450 premium and CHF 1,600 rent are arbitrary example inputs, not quoted premiums or market benchmarks.

Zurich budget example, CHF per month
Monthly average / inputCHF
Calculated payroll net5,623.69
Own external premium (assumed)450.00
After premium5,173.69
Own rent (assumed)1,600.00
After premium and rent3,573.69

Groceries, utilities, transport and other personal expenses still have to come out of the final amount. It is neither a complete savings rate nor a promised payslip.

The premium is only part of health spending

FOPH explains that premiums vary with factors including insurer, residence and insurance model, rather than income. Deductibles and other cost sharing need separate consideration. A CHF 450 premium therefore does not establish a complete personal healthcare budget.

Compulsory cover and exemptions depend on individual circumstances. This article covers a simple resident-employee case. Cross-border work, postings and special arrangements need separate review.

Avoid duplicate deductions

In the job-offer comparison, do not enter employee contributions already included in payroll net again as costs. External health insurance should contain only the additional premium you bear yourself. Do not then add it again under other living costs.

An empty field means unknown. An explicit zero means you are assuming no additional amount for that field. If your premium is still unknown, your conclusion about the remainder after costs is incomplete too.
