Compare guaranteed annual pay, special payments and annual net income when weighing German and Austrian job offers.

A German offer of EUR 4,500 a month and an Austrian offer of EUR 4,000 a month need a common annual basis. With twelve and fourteen equal agreed payments respectively, they amount to EUR 54,000 and EUR 56,000 gross a year. The smaller monthly figure is the larger annual package in this invented example.

AustriaEUR 4,00014EUR 56,000

The Austrian special payments are explicitly agreed in this example. The Austrian Chamber of Labour explains that entitlement, amount and timing depend on the collective agreement or employment contract. There is no universal statutory entitlement to holiday and Christmas pay in private employment.

Check whether a quoted annual figure already includes those payments. Do not multiply an agreed EUR 56,000 annual total by 14/12 again. Record an uncertain performance bonus and a one-off joining bonus separately. Joining or leaving during the year also requires checking the proportional entitlement.

Equal annual gross does not imply equal net

Taxes and employee contributions can differ. Austria treats special payments differently from regular pay under particular conditions. The government explanation and 2026 social-insurance guidance explain their classification and contribution treatment. A universal take-home percentage would hide those differences.

Use the Germany–Austria tax comparison for the tax-system question. For actual contracts, open the job-offer comparison and enter total annual gross including agreed special payments. Austria uses the existing preferential special-payment model; this simplified tool does not let you choose an individual payment split.

Monthly average and actual payslip

Annual net divided by twelve is a monthly average. A contract with special payments will not necessarily pay that amount in every month. Check whether regular payment months cover recurring rent and bills.

After calculating net pay, add your rent, additional external health insurance and selected living costs. The contract example above compares only guaranteed gross pay. It makes no claim about personal take-home pay or which job to accept.

The simplified offer tool supports its disclosed single employee profile without children. Continue into TaxApp for supported detailed profile settings. Contract terms and payment dates still need their own review.
